This presentation will explain the rationale for the publication of a WHO Classification of Pediatric Tumors, including the unique characteristics of pediatric tumors (compared to adult tumors) and why they require a different approach to diagnostic workup and classification. It will discuss the role of immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis and classification of pediatric tumors and how it can assist in determining prognosis and selecting optimal therapy for children.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– Explain the unique characteristics of pediatric tumors and how they are reflected in the inaugural WHO Classification of Paediatric Tumours.
– Describe a standardized approach to working up pediatric tumors including key differences from the approach to adult tumors including the role of immunohistochemistry.
– List specific examples of how immunohistochemistry is an essential tool in the diagnosis and classification of pediatric tumors and how it can assist in determining prognosis and selecting optimal therapy for children.
